REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE AND SAFE HAVEN LAWS

DR. LAURY OAKS

When: Wednesday, April 12th,
12 – 1 PM

Where:
16-154 CHS (Brentwood Conference Room), UCLA

Laury Oaks is Professor and Chair of the Department of Feminist Studies and an affiliated faculty member in the Department
of Sociology and the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on reproductive politics, and she has published work on controversies involving motherhood, health risks, and reproductive rights in Japan,
Ireland, and the U.S.

Dr. Oaks will discuss her recent book
Giving Up Baby: Safe Haven Laws, Motherhood, and Reproductive Justice, which explores how well-intentioned safe haven laws may actually promote a narrow definition of who “deserves to be a mother,” thereby disenfranchising poor women, adolescent
women, and women of color.
