VICTORY! UCSF Ends Deal with Dignity

FYI…for those who worked against the UCSF/Dignity Health deal…

Apologies if you’ve received this message multiple times, but we wanted to make sure that everyone on our lists gets the latest update on the UC/Dignity deal: UCSF announced this morning that it is no longer planning an expanded affiliation with Dignity Health, and as a result, there will no longer be votes on that affiliation by the Health Services Committee and the full board of the UC Regents, and the threat of expanding this partnership throughout the UC’s is no longer looming overhead. This is a GREAT victory, and thank you so much for your efforts in making this happen!!

As you will see from the statement and FAQs, however, it is clear that UCSF is planning on continuing its existing relationship with Dignity Health, which problematically includes sending UCSF patients to St. Mary’s, a Dignity Health hospital in San Francisco. The FAQ also says that UCSF will be continuing to look for ways to partner with Dignity Health going forward—including in the area of primary care, where the Catholic directives would still play a role in denying care.

While we are so glad that the expanded affiliation seems to be off the table, we are still looking into the existing relationship, and will monitor any future proposals. To that end, we may reach back out to you all for more support down the road.

Many, many thanks for your efforts here – this is definitely a win for reproductive justice and LGBTQ rights, and we couldn’t have done this without all of your help: whether you came to the protest, spoke at public comment, passed out flyers about this deal, or told your family/friends about this, you all were critical in this fight!
