Student Spotlights
Nikolas Wianecki (MPH in Community Health Sciences, 2023 & PhD in Community Health Sciences, Expected 2029)
“Completing my APEx was by far one of the most formative parts of my MPH. Actually being able to apply the research and public health skills I was learning in the classroom to real-world challenges was incredibly eye-opening, rewarding, and humbling. I spent the summer working on a joint project with the Ministry of Health and the Kisii Konya Oroiboro Project (KIKOP) in Kisii, Kenya, where I collaborated with researchers, practitioners, and community members to better understand issues around gender-based violence, maternal health, and access to care. That experience helped me see what community-engaged public health work actually looks like in practice and how important it is to center partnerships, local knowledge, and community voices. More than anything, it gave me a clearer sense of the kind of public health work I wanted to pursue, work that is informed by and responsive to the people it aims to serve. My APEx led to my first job in global sexual and reproductive health research after graduation, which ultimately set me on the path to pursuing a PhD in Community Health Sciences today, where I continue building on those skills in my research.”

“I completed my APEx in Summer 2022 with WINGS Guatemala, a non-profit organization that provides reproductive health services to primarily rural, underserved people across Guatemala. As the Monitoring & Evaluation Intern and fluent in Spanish, I completed exit interviews after clients received family planning services. Interviews sought to understand perceptions of contraceptives and family planning, barriers and facilitators to accessing care, and decision-making processes around selecting contraceptives. During my 10-week internship, I traveled with the organization’s mobile clinic teams and completed 197 interviews at 13 mobile clinics and 7 standing clinics. Then, I analyzed the interview data and compiled a written report as well as a presentation that highlighted key results. I utilized these results to make recommendations for the organization to strengthen services and meet the needs of clients across Guatemala. This experience strengthened my monitoring and evaluation skills, which I draw upon in my current role as a Project Coordinator, where I analyze survey data to identify important trends, make recommendations to strengthen program services, and communicate these results to different audiences.”
