Internship Year:

I worked as a program assistant and outreach coordinator for the sexual health program at the hospital. The main goal of my fieldwork was to re-develop and re-launch the sexual health program at the hospital. Focus groups and key informant interviews with key organizations provided information on cultural taboos, stigma, and barriers to treatment in regards to HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the Ghanaian culture. We conducted community outreach at local shops, restaurants, the Sakumono hospital, and at a local university to raise awareness of the sexual health workshop program at Sakumono hospital. The sexual health workshops were held with over twenty pregnant and reproductive aged women. It is expected that public health workers at the hospital will continue to hold sexual health workshops for the community in the future.
