Creating Space

Creating Space, a research and advocacy project started by the Reproductive Health Interest Group (RHIG), began in November 2015 with the goal to support breastfeeding students, staff, and faculty at UCLA through improved lactation education, support, accommodations, and policies.  Meeting this goal will create a healthy environment for families and lactating individuals pursuing higher education and employment on the UCLA campus.

Creating Space follows four main objectives:

  • Improve the built environment
  • Conduct research of individuals that have breastfed or pumped on campus
  • Deliver lactation education
  • Pursue policy development

Some of Creating Space’s previous accomplishments include establishing Certified Lactation Educator Counselors to provide one-on-one counseling; mapping existing lactation rooms on campus; and launching a website with information on relevant campus policies, resources, and services related to lactation. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Bruin Lactation Coalition, Creating Space has also written and released a White Paper for the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor offices outlining policy recommendations to improve the lactation environment on campus. Creating Space continues to build strong partnerships with departments across campus and engage a wide variety of dedicated community stakeholders.
